A Pictoral Tour of the Black Hills of South Dakota PLUS Bonus Rodeo Pictures!

Tiss and Randi

First thing I want to do is thank Ms. Tiss Treib for inviting us, hosting us, and acting as tour guide during the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche last weekend. Here we are in downtown Belle Fourche, South Dakota waiting for the cattle drive.

She was so much fun, and taught me everything I needed to know about the rodeo. Thanks, Tiss!

Photo1001Kick and I started our ‘second honeymoon vacation’ with a bang on Sunday – we visited an old Minuteman missile silo outside of Rapid City. Kick is reading the dystopian book Wool (where everyone on Earth has to live in a silo) so this was a must-see (for one of us) Hahaha

But it was very interesting, and I learned a great deal about a very scary time in US history.

Then Kick needed a new hat (I brought along four, so he didn’t think I really needed another one.) Here he is trying to decide between a George Strait and a Kenny Chesney. (George won out!)

He did surprise me with a lovely bead for my Pandora bracelet – it’s Black Hills gold, heart shaped – and I love it!

DSC01952No trip to the Black Hills would be complete without visiting Custer State Park and driving the Wildlife Loop. We saw antelope, prairie dogs, burros, deer, and many, many buffalo. It’s so amazing to see them wandering free and so close to the cars!

DSC01987Heading back to Keystone, we took the Needles Highway. Wow, it is so impressive! Steep drop-offs, single-car tunnels, and soaring rock formations. I’m glad Kick was driving.

DSC02021The next morning, we headed up to Mount Rushmore. Truly awe inspiring. There’s a path through the woods that leads you right to the base of the mountain. It’s one of the highlights of our trip.

???????????????????????????????The Crazy Horse memorial was very interesting, and after a long, hot day, we headed to the Angostura Recreation Area for a swim. (Um, this is your lucky day – no pictures of me in a swimsuit.)

Wednesday morning we met Tiss in downtown Belle Fourche for the cattle drive. Yep, right down Main Street! Cowboys, cattle, horses, and really sharp-looking horns. No injuries, and it was thrilling to see.

Wednesday evening was the start of the four-day rodeo schedule with the Ranch Rodeo. It’s different from the PRCA rodeo, but a lot of fun. The most exciting event was the Wild Cow Milking.

???????????????????????????????We even took time to do some hiking on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.

Photo1060Our last day, we drove through the Badlands. It’s beautiful in its desolate landscape and dry, hot temperature. Almost like being on another planet.

We are seriously talking about going back next year, and maybe inviting all you rodeo lovers out there, too! Wouldn’t it be fun if we could take over a hotel, shuttle over to the rodeo grounds and downtown Belle Fourche, and even out to Mount Rushmore? It was so AWESOME meeting Randi and Kick Alexander. WE did have a great time. and Yes! We are going to do it again next year. Randi and I will keep in touch and I can get rodeo tickets lined up and we’ll see about hotels and so forth. Please consider it for your summer vacation. You can even bring your spouse, cause men like good rodeo’s too, ( well, some do) but there are alot of things to do in the Black Hills area and we’ll find something to keep them occupied. LOL.

  2. ELF says:

Wow, I have never seen that part of the country, it looks so fascinating…and I love Black Hills Gold jewelry. Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing!

    • Randi Alexander says:

Thanks, ELF, I’d seen Mount Rushmore when I was a kid, but this trip was so memorable. It’s a beautiful place to visit.

  3. Clare O'Beara says:

What gorgeous photos, and the length of the horns on those cattle! I loved all the shots so thanks for showing them to us. I’m sure you’ll get great inspiration.

    • Randi Alexander says:

I’m very inspired already, Clare. Just reading the cowboys’ names on the rodeo programs gave me a dozen ideas.

  4. Eileen says:

Love your pictures. Tell me when and where and I will be there with boots and hat!! Would love to go back there and visit with Tiss again.

  5. Teresa Hughes says:

I have never been but would love to go! My parents just got back from a 2 week trip and saw all the same things you saw. They are suggesting our entire family go next time. I’m ready!

Thanks for sharing your experiences and pics! Glad you had a great time!

    • Randi Alexander says:

Wow, that’s a coincidence! Definitely a great trip for a family, and we plan to bring the Twerplettes next time.

How did you know that’s where my husband and me are headed for our next big adventure!!! With RV and motorcycle. Love the pictures and can’t wait to go!!! P.S. – it’s Rodeo time for me this weekend too!!!

    • Randi Alexander says:

I bet you’re heading for Sturgis, Donya! Have a blast. And enjoy the rodeo, too. It’s Cowboy Christmas, so rodeos are going on everywhere.

Wonderful place especially the waterfall 🙂

    • Randi Alexander says:

It was beautiful. The mile-long hike (one way) ended in the cool glade where there were three waterfalls. Worth the hike!

  12. Cindy Hamilton says:

Thanks for sharing I always wanted to go there but I haven’t been able to. Lovely bracelet!

    • Randi Alexander says:

Maybe next year, Cindy! The bead is so nice. It’s my favorite now, but don’t tell the Twerplettes!

  13. Mary Preston says:

The pictures are amazing thank you.

    • Randi Alexander says:

Thanks, Mary, we really loved the area. It has everything from a beautiful river recreation area to the dry desert of the Badlands. So many things to see – we already have a list of what we missed this year and want to see next year.
