I’m probably going to be spanked by my publisher, but I didn’t have anything else to talk about today. You see, the cover I’m revealing isn’t the final polished version. It’s a draft. I know for sure a comma is going between “Long” and ”Hot”—but who cares, right?

And sure, he’s not the most handsome cover model, nowhere near as cute as Tommy Triplehorn in my mind, anyway. But what I love about this cover is everything else. See the countryside behind the couple? The cattle? It’s exactly how I picture it. How I remember it. See the woman? She looks older than Tommy. Self-assured. And she is, except in one place, where she lets him be completely in charge.

So I’m more than happy with this cover. What do you think? It’s the last of the Triple Horn Brand trilogy, following Laying Down the Law (Colt’s story) and In Too Deep (Gabe’s). Tommy’s the last, and you get to see the other couples one last time before they all ride off into the sunset. The book releases August 13, so you have to wait a little while.

The first two books were strictly one man/one woman. In this last one, Tommy brings in a friend to sex his woman up. Ahem…she needed it, ya know. If you haven’t read the first books in the series, get ready!

DOSHA, Contest Winners and a little chat about NOAH

Okay, on to more pressing matters. . . .
I’ve been working on Noah’s book, Skye Blue. It’s the next in my Hell Yeah! series and has been much anticipated with my readers for a couple of reasons. First – Noah has been pain in the rear. He is the McCoy who can’t see shades of grey. Everything is black and white to Noah. He’s all business. The numbers always have to add up and he doesn’t cut any of his brothers or their loves much slack. Protect the family, protect the McCoy name, protect the McCoy fortune – that was his mantra. He almost made Jacob lose Jessie and he had a hard time accepting what made Isaac tick. Harper, his girlfriend, desired things that Noah couldn’t handle, so he pushed her away. (Which was okay, there is someone in Louisiana by the name of Revel Lee who has Harper ALWAYS ON HIS MIND – ha!) But Noah is going to have to face the fact that he needs to loosen up. Noah needs a woman who can make him glad he’s a man and show him that there is more than one path to walk, more than one way to make love, and more excitement and passion in this world than he ever realized. Skye is that woman.
As the book opens, Noah is battling his sorrow and anger over Aron’s disappearance. He even has the audacity to wonder if Aron doesn’t want to be found. (WHEW! HUGE SCENE HERE! HA!) The family is tired of Noah and his rigid outlook on life and the only solace he can find is with Skye, who wants him just the way he is and doesn’t mind teaching him how to enjoy life and sex and – — haha – well, I won’t give it all away.
Skye is not the type of woman Noah is used to. Skye is Native American. She is confident. She is strong. She is serene and she is the sexiest thing he has ever seen, held, or touched in his life. She also has a secret that turns both of their lives upside down – - but, I digress. I am fascinated with Skye. I am going to spend time in Broken Bow, Oklahoma in a cabin on the river and I’m going to be Skye for a while. She hunts. She rides bareback. She is one with nature. She holds her arms up to the setting sun and knows she is at peace in the midst of the storm. She is exactly what Noah needs.
I have pattered Skye after an ancestor of mine. I am a mutt, as you know. I am Creole. I have French blood, Spanish blood and Indian blood running through my veins. The Indian part comes from Dosha. She lived in the late 1800’s in the eastern part of Texas known as the Big Thicket. She, like Skye, was strong and determined to take care of her family, even when her husband was too incapacitated to do it for her. You see, my great-great-whatever grandfather was not a McCoy. He was a rascal. A drunkard rascal.
The home he built for Dosha and their child was not the best of dwellings. It was made of logs that were not fitted together well with mud or clay or whatever they used as mortar back in those early Texas pioneer days. And the part of Texas they lived in was a wild wilderness full of predators and snakes and alligators and – yes, Indians. They made their living trapping and living off the land. And somehow, somewhere, great-whatever-grandfather found plenty to drink.
One night, he was passed out drunk and Dosha was caring for their child. The fire that was keeping them from freezing was beginning to die down and the much needed wood to keep it going was out in the dark cold night. She had to have it though, so she put up on her buckskin jacket and prepared to face the elements – until she heard it – a hair-raising scream that tore through the night and caused goosebumps to rise on her body. It was a sound she feared, it was a sound she dreaded. The spine-tingling scream had sounded like a woman in distress, but it wasn’t – it was a panther, a hungry panther. Dosha tried to rousé her worthless husband, but it was no use, he was dead to the world. So, she gathered up her son and held him close – and waited.
The fire was only smoldering now. She listened – waiting for another scream. Nothing. Maybe, the big cat was gone. GRRRRR! No! He wasn’t, he was right outside the cabin wall. RIPPPP!!! Dosha jumped! He was scratching at clawing at the logs. Clasping her baby to her breast, she whimpered in fright. Staring at the blank wall of the cabin, she tried to imagine what the panther was doing just on the other side. Scratches and snarls met her ears and she cringed, but what she saw next, horrified her. She stared in disbelief.
Toes. Claws. She could see the feet of the panther sticking through the cracks of the logs! He was climbing the wall of the cabin! Dosha jumped to her feet. The fire had died down. The beast was intending to come down their chimney like some macabre winter visitor. Laying down her little boy, she raced to the fire and tried to stoke it up, but the embers were too faint. Racing back to the wall, she checked the monster’s progress, he was higher than before. Screaming for her husband, she jostled his dead to the world body, to no avail. So she did the only thing left – running to the small wardrobe, she slung out shirts and pants until she found it – John’s hatchet. He carried it on trips, but he kept it wrapped in a handkerchief when not in use, tools were precious in the wilderness.
Holding the hatchet in her hand, she approached the razor sharp claws and feet of the panther. The front ones were high, the lower ones about at her waist. One jump was all it would take and he would be on the roof. There was no time to waste, so she drew back her arm and struck, cutting off three of the panthers toes as they were bared to her gaze, gripping at the raw pine wood.
A wild, screaming roar rent the night and the panther wailed in agony. But he let go and he jumped down and he raced off into the night to lick his wounds. And Dosha and her son survived to live another day (or Jess and I wouldn’t be here with you now – ha!)

A rumble of thunder broke the stillness as she contemplated what to do. She’d taken a drive to clear her head and jumpstart her muse for her next book, not end up on the side of the road out of gas with no houses within several miles.

This was cowboy country. Hill Country in Texas boasted some of the biggest longhorn cattle spreads in the state. Several cattle mooed in the distance but she couldn’t tell how close a house might be. At least cattle meant humans…somewhere.

Large banks of dark clouds continued to roll across the sky. Several huge raindrops hit her windshield with a loud splat before the sky opened up in a torrential downpour.

“Just fucking great. Now fate is going to throw me into a huge thunderstorm. Why? Because I was stupid enough to go for a drive by myself during a writers conference in San Antonio and ended up out here in the middle of the country. Now, I’m stuck on the side of some dirt road, out of gas and God only knows how far from the nearest house.”

Lightning flashed followed shortly by a loud crash of thunder. Mesa jumped. A shiver raced through her body as her heart clenched in fear. She hated thunderstorms.

Her cell phone beeped the ominous sound of no cell phone coverage. Great!

She glanced out the window and saw water rushing under her car along a gulley she didn’t realize she’d straddled when she stopped. “Shit. Flash flooding? I’m so screwed.”

As the water began rising rapidly she realized she needed to get the hell out of her car before it was washed away. In the distance she could make out several larger rocks. “If I can get on top of them, I should be safe from the rush. Of course, that means I’ll be out in the rain getting soaked.” Fear rose, threatening to choke her with the lump in her throat. She rubbed her arms trying to calm the chills while deciding what to do. She really didn’t have much choice. Water ran in rivulets down the windshield. Lightning continued to flash and thunder rolled over the area. She sucked in a large breath as she bit her lip.

A moment later a tap, tap, tap on her window startled her out of her thoughts. She jumped and screamed as a face appeared near her door. Blue eyes with long lashes stared back beneath a black cowboy hat. Black hair ruffled slightly with the wind.

“Ma’am? Are you all right?”

“I’m fine.”

“You need to get this car out of the water. You’ll be washed away. It’s rising fast.”

“I can’t. I’m out of gas.”

“Open the door.”

“Hell, no. Do I look crazy to you?” she asked, her voice shrill with terror.

“Trust me. If I were a serial killer, I wouldn’t be out in this shit trying to find women to abduct. I’m going to help you, but you need to get out of the car first before we’re both swept away.”

Mesa bit her lip. Should she trust him?

“Ma’am?”

“All right.” She eased open the door to find the water almost reached the bottom of the car. The cowboy pulled the door the rest of the way as she grabbed her purse.

“We have to hurry,” he said, offering her a hand to help her from the car. “Let me help you. This water is rushing pretty fast.”

A red horse stood patiently several feet away with its head down, riding out the storm the only way horses knew how. A cowboy on a real horse out here in the middle of nowhere? Surely, it’s safe. I mean serial killers don’t ride horses, right?

Thank so much for having me today!

Happy Mother’s Day

My mother had an addiction to reading. From the first time I can remember, I always see my mom with a book in her hand. My father would joke with us that we shouldn’t bother Mom when she was close to the end of a book. If there were fewer pages on the right side than the left, we should watch out.

As I grew up, our house was always filled with books. When we would move, books were the bane of our existence because there was just so many of them. Boxes after boxes of stories she couldn’t leave behind. I would play with them, arranging them by color and author and title. Yeah, I might have a touch of OCD, but I loved organizing my mom’s books.

We moved a lot. Sometimes we had plenty of space and other we had very little, but my father always found a way to keep my mom’s precious books around her. Even when we didn’t have the space for a bookshelf, we put them in closets, cupboards and shelves.

When I was fourteen, I picked up one of my mother’s books. I remember the moment vividly. We were living in one of the smaller places and I was organizing the books at the bottom of the china cabinet. These were the historicals with their bright colors and beautiful dressed people. And I decided to read one. Skye O’Malley by Bertrice Small. Yeah, probably not the best book for a fourteen year old, but I found a whole new world and I was off. I devoured Johanna Lindsey, Jude Deveraux and Julie Garwood. I was on a path.

My father is gone now, so it’s my responsibility to make sure my mother has her books. I know he’s somewhere shaking his head because now she carries her collection around on a Kindle. He would have loved that. My mother reads everything I write. She’s my champion and my biggest fan. She’s the reason I write what I write not only because she exposed me to some of the greatest romance novels written, but she is a woman who knows how to love. She and my father was the first romance I witnessed and it was true and pure through all the hard times.

So Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom in the world. I wouldn’t be here without you.

The Heart of the Appaloosa-it stole mine!

Did you ever hear a song and have it run around in your head until you couldn’t get rid of it no matter what? That’s what happened to me with The Heart of the Appaloosa.
About twenty years ago (yup, things hang around my brain far too long) I went to see an outdoor performance by the famous Lipizzaner stallions. During half time a woman in full Native American dress put a gorgeous Appaloosa stallion through his paces. It was, as they say, a wondrous thing to see. The stallion was huge yet completely graceful and very responsive to the rider’s commands. The music she used was The Heart of the Appaloosa.
Well, the song tucked itself away in a corner of my brain for a while but a couple of years ago it popped up again and wouldn’t go away. I downloaded it from iTunes and printed out the lyrics. Now it was even worse because I kept listening to it on my iPod and driving myself and everyone else crazy. So I decided to do some research.
The song tells the story of the 1877 Nez Perce war in Idaho. The Nez perch led by the great Chief Joseph, camped peacefully along the Wallawa River, minding their own business and raising their magnificent Appaloosa horses (the name comes from the fact they bred them along the Palous River). But the settlers were moving further westward and began encroaching on the lands the tribe claimed as theirs. When gold was discovered in the streams it was all over but the shouting. Washington ordered the tribe removed so they could claim the land and the minerals.
But the Nez Perce had a secret weapon-the Appaloosa. The horse could, as the song says, “Toe dance on a ridge or gallop up a mountainside” and was extremely fast.
The Chief Joseph stood before his people and said, I am now called Rolling thunder and we will fight to find a new home for ourselves.”
They fled into the Bitterroot Mountains with the cavalry on their heels. Their horses were their best weapon. When the colonel in charge of the cavalry figured that out, he order all the horses slaughtered. “Kill the Appaloosa, wherever he be found.”
Most of the horses and the tribe were slain and the remnants of the tribe left were shipped off to a reservation in Oklahoma. There were very few Appaloosa horses left.
But in 1938 five owners managed to contact each other and chartered the Appaloosa Horse Club. Today the strain is still highly values and is often used in rodeo competition because of its speed and skill.
In 1975 Governor Cecil Andrus signed a bill making the Appaloosa the state horse of Idaho.
For me that was just the beginning of the story. And in my crazy brain it inspired the outline of a love story, between a man and a woman both dealing with tragedy. He is a descendant of Chief Joseph trying to rebuild his Appaloosa breeding ranch and keep it out of the hands of the evil villain (a descendant of the colonel who ordered the horses killed) who wants the land for the mineral rights and she is a woman who thinks her life has been badly changed forever. While simultaneously fighting their attraction to each other and giving not it, they embark on a treacherous journey to save both the ranch and the hero’s prized Appaloosa stallion.
I’d tell you more but I don’t want to spoil the story. It won’t be out until next year so I have plenty of time to tease about it. But I will give you the last verse of the song that always makes me cry:
“But sometimes without warning from a dull domestic herd
A spotted horse with spirit wondrous will emerge
Strong it is and fearless and nimble on the hill
Listening for thunder
The appaloosa’s living still.”

How to Know if You’re Ready for a Menage

Yep, that’s about as wild as I ever get. But it makes the hard work and solitude of the rest of the year worthwhile. You can bet I’m already looking forward to next year’s RT!

This is the story of my life lately. The days are escaping me faster than I can keep up.

Sorry for missing my last post and doing this one so late today. What can I say, the craziness of life.

I hope everyone is doing great and I want everyone to have a Happy Mother’s Day (even if you’re only kids are the furry kind).

On my 29th post I should have some news about when my new book will come out along with the cover. Right now I’m working on a frantic deadline for June 1st, thankfully it’s an anthology story, so I can get it done.

So here’s a picture of my furry girl all relaxed and sprawled out in her bed.

I got back from Romantic Time Booklover’s Convention on Sunday, exhausted and ready to put my feet up. I had such a great time and visited with old friend, met new ones and connected with so many other authors and readers it was fabulous. And I got to play with my new toy!

New toy, you ask? My daughter showed me an app on my iPhone called Vine and I couldn’t leave it alone throughout the conference. It’s like a video twitter. You have about 6 seconds to record some blip of activity and you can post it to twitter, Facebook or wherever! See my Vine videos below. My sister, Delilah Devlin was so flustered every time we tried to do a Vine, she just ended up making weird faces.
