Fantasy vs Reality

I got to thinking on this today so I thought I’d post it and see what everyone else thought of your fantasy cowboy vs reality cowboy.

Most of us who post on this blog write about cowboys. I do, Randi does, Sable does and so on. How much of our stories are based on reality and how much are based on our fantasy cowboy. Do you care as a reader?

I try to write all my stories somewhat based on the reality of the cowboy way of life which I believe most if not all of us do who writes these. But as the reader do you want your cowboy to be what we all perceive we want the cowboy to be or do you want the cowboy to be something a little more realistic?

Cowboy as we know them are hard working, tough men. Ranch work is hard work. We know that. I sure wouldn’t want to sit on a horse all day. My legs are wobbly enough just riding a couple of hours. We want them to be kind, loyal, gentle with their woman, sexy…all the things we have in our mind a cowboy should be. Not that real cowboys aren’t those things, I guess, but to me it’s more of the fantasy we want them to be. Then again, romance is all about the fantasy man, right?

Dream with your eyes open and love your cowboys!

~ Sandy

P.S. Comment on the blog and I’ll draw one winner tomorrow morning to receive their choice of any of my available books.

Have a great Friday!

I think you are right about being in live with the fantasy cowboy. It be nice if there was a cross between the two. Either way I will read a good cowboy story.

I love fantasy cowboys. But I have met some real cowboys and let me tell you, as a young single woman I would not have kicked those butts outta bed either. I am a happy married lady now though. :)

I still love reading about them.

What I like about the cowboys (reading), they are pure gentlemen the way their Mama raised them. I love that they are gentle and kind outside and behind closed doors, ready to ride. :)

  4. mawmom says:

I love reading about cowboys and the way they are so polite and gentlemanly, the only cowboys I have run into in real life were drunk so I can’t really judge if they would have been that way sober but the were real pricks. So I think I will stick with my book cowboys and lust that way ;O) Carin

I count on you all to give me a nice mix of the real and the fantasy in my cowboy stories. But, whatever the mix, I love a good cowboy read!

  6. Tracie says:

When I sit down to read a book I am escaping so ANYTHING cowboy is good with me. The sexier the better. :)

    Fantasy vs Reality
Lets see i love them either way but the fantasy one might win a bit.they always seem to be more of everything ;)
They also seem to be the sexy kind of dirty and not the dirty, dirty.lol

  8. Susan T. says:

Since I too read to escape, I like my cowboy to be a little of both fantasy and reality.

  9. I like a mixture. Of course, cowboys are hardworking and they have the cowboy look, charm and accent. But most cowboys I have met (which isn’t many) either have a vulgar sense of humor or are completely a**holes. So, when the author gives a cowboy a witty sense of humor with a sly grin or a brooding, dark look but is still a gentleman who respects women, I deeply appriciate it :)

  10. Clare O'Beara says:

While I don’t live near cowboys I enjoy reading about the reality of their lives. A good book should give some fantasy to draw us in and grab our attention, but it should also show us some real life, whether to make us appreciate where our beef comes from or as a social comment on how cowboys don’t have big pensions and healthcare. So the individual can well be a fantasy, a man we’d love to meet, but the background should be reality, or close to it.

  11. Sara says:

I like to have the facts of what ranching is like and the hard work those cowboys need to do in a story, but I also like some sweet loving cowboy things too. Stuff that we imagine our dream cowboy would be like. So I guess what I’m saying is give me some of both worlds, reality with a big heaping of fantasy thrown in. :)

  12. I like to read about real cowboys, not just the kind that wear a hat but do no work, otherwise how do they get all those mustles we love to feel.

  13. Anne Clark says:

I love the fantasy of cowboy romance but real cowboys I have found are more than anything you could ever write about, kind, loyal and hardworking. They want what we want love and someplace to belong.

  14. I’ve never met a real cowboy, so I rely on you to feed my imagination. They seem to epitomise all that is masculine and desirable, and that gets my heart racing. Thank you! :x

  15. Mary Preston says:

I think the reality would be smellier if nothing else. I think I want my cowboys to be larger than life. So the fantasy of the cowboy wins me over.

  16. TIFFANY M says:

I LOVE COWBOYS. I WOULD LIKE MY COWBOY TO BE A SEXY, MILLIONAIRE-TURNED COWBOY. WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO ALL KINDS OF THINGS. HE WOULD HAVE TO KNOW HIS WAY AROUND THE HOUSE, LIKE COOKING AND CLEANING, KNOW HOW TO WOO A WOMAN AND FIXE HER CAR AND HER COMPUTER AT IN ONE. HE WOULD BE A RANCHER WITH A FARM, BUT VERY INTELLIGENT AND WITTY, WITH A WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR, AND KNOW HOW TO DRESS FOR THE JOB AND FOR ROMANCING (SMILE)

  17. lib6258 says:

oh no! So you’re telling me that the fantasy ones aren’t real? I’m shattered! (just kidding!)
I’m sure there is some measure of reality in all the reality ones – I wish all the ones I have read about so far were real and heading my way! Sigh!
Geez now I have to change books and get my cowboy fix!

  18. lisagk says:

  20. I love cowoys! I did date a guy with the hat, pick up, sjy blue eyes and yes the charm. He was fun at the time! Fantasy wins out though, wish it were real.

  21. Tina B says:

Well, I don’t know any real cowboys, so I would say that mine are all made up in my head. ;)
